Man Utd make decision on whether Michael Carrick will remain in charge against Bournemouth

According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United have decided to keep Michael Carrick in charge for Sunday’s Premier League encounter with Bournemouth, despite growing pressure following their disappointing Champions League defeat to Como.

The club are reportedly maintaining their current plans ahead of the weekend fixture, with Carrick’s position not under immediate threat despite increasing concerns about the team’s performances.

United suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in Italy on Wednesday, intensifying scrutiny of the manager’s tactics and leadership. The situation became more uncomfortable after captain Bruno Fernandes openly questioned the team’s tactical approach following the defeat.

The Red Devils have managed just seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches, with their only league victory reportedly coming against newly promoted Ipswich Town in August.

Nevertheless, Carrick is expected to oversee preparations for Bournemouth after the squad were given Thursday off following their return from Italy in the early hours of the morning.

The former Manchester United midfielder is also scheduled to face the media during his usual pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, where he could face further questions about the club’s recent struggles.

Sunday’s match could prove significant as United prepare for a challenging sequence of fixtures. After welcoming Bournemouth to Old Trafford, they will travel to face Chelsea on October 31 before returning to Champions League action against Roma.

United will then host Aston Villa ahead of the final international break of the year, leaving Carrick with several opportunities to improve the team’s results.

Meanwhile, speculation over potential managerial replacements is continuing, with reports suggesting that United have begun considering alternatives should they eventually decide to make a change.

Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is among the names being discussed, while Napoli boss Antonio Conte has also been linked with the position.

Julian Nagelsmann is another potential candidate, with the German coach reportedly interested in returning to club management. Fabian Hurzeler, Kieran McKenna and Cesc Fabregas have also been mentioned as possible options.

For now, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for the Bournemouth fixture, but United will be under pressure to deliver a stronger performance and halt their disappointing run of results.
