Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has revealed that Brazilian forward Joao Pedro will be unavailable for several weeks after sustaining a thigh injury, dealing a significant blow to the club ahead of their upcoming Carabao Cup encounter with Liverpool.
According to a report by The Daily Post on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Alonso confirmed the development while addressing journalists before the cup fixture. The Spanish tactician explained that the injury would prevent Pedro from featuring for Chelsea in the coming weeks, although he did not provide a specific date for the striker’s return.
Providing an update on the forward’s condition, Alonso said, "João has suffered a thigh injury, he won't be available for few weeks," he said.
Pedro had already missed Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, when the Blues suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat. His continued absence means the London club must prepare for another important fixture without one of their attacking options.
The situation could become more challenging for Chelsea, as Pedro is also expected to miss the Premier League match against Manchester United. His injury therefore threatens to keep him out of at least two major encounters as the team navigates a demanding period of its campaign.
Although Alonso’s announcement has provided some clarity regarding the nature of the problem, the club has yet to establish an exact recovery timeline. Chelsea supporters will consequently have to wait for further medical updates before knowing when the Brazilian forward could return to action.
Pedro’s absence is likely to place additional responsibility on Chelsea’s remaining attacking players, who will be expected to contribute goals and create opportunities during his recovery period.
The Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool presents Chelsea with an opportunity to respond positively to their recent defeat against Tottenham and maintain their ambitions in the competition.
However, facing Liverpool without Pedro could make the challenge more difficult, particularly as Alonso seeks to restore confidence within his squad and secure a positive result.
Chelsea will now need to adjust their attacking plans and make effective use of the available players while awaiting the Brazilian’s return to full fitness.
