New Super Eagles Striker Makes First Statement After Helping Club End Losing Run

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, October 22, 2026, newly called-up Super Eagles striker George Ilenikhena has spoken publicly after helping Al-Ittihad secure an impressive 4-1 victory over Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League on Tuesday. The Nigerian-born forward scored once and provided an assist, earning the Man of the Match award as his team ended a disappointing run of two consecutive defeats.

Speaking to Saudi journalists after the encounter, Ilenikhena highlighted the importance of responding positively after recent setbacks. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, explaining that securing victory was essential to restoring confidence and getting their campaign back on track.

“It is very important for us to win this game after losing two games. It is very important to react, and we reacted in the best way, so we are very happy,” he said.

The 20-year-old forward had missed Al-Ittihad’s 3-2 defeat against Al-Hilal on October 10 because of fitness concerns. He later returned to action after recovering from a minor injury but could not prevent his side from suffering a 2-1 loss to Shabab Al-Ahli.

However, Ilenikhena delivered a much stronger performance against Al-Ettifaq, playing a significant role in helping his teammates collect all three points. His goal and assist demonstrated his attacking influence and provided the team with a much-needed boost following their recent struggles.

The former Monaco player featured for 73 minutes before being replaced by Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri. The substitute subsequently scored twice late in the match, completing Al-Ittihad’s convincing 4-1 victory and ensuring the hosts finished the encounter strongly.

Reflecting on the substitution and the team’s collective effort, Ilenikhena stressed that every player has a responsibility to contribute whenever called upon by the manager. He maintained that teamwork and the willingness to support one another were essential ingredients in securing the result.

“The coach changed. Everybody will help the team in the best way he can. It is what we did today that we won,” he added.

According to the report, Ilenikhena has now recorded either a goal or an assist in each of his last four Saudi Pro League appearances, underlining his growing consistency in front of goal.

His latest performance will be encouraging for Al-Ittihad as they seek to build momentum following their return to winning ways. The striker will also hope to maintain his impressive form as he pursues further opportunities to represent Nigeria at international level.
