According to a report by footballTransfers on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly exploring a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié, whom the club views as a strong fit for its defensive needs.

According to SPORT, sporting director Deco has made initial contact with the Ecuadorian international’s representatives to learn whether he would consider a midseason move.

Barcelona are seeking a versatile defender who can play both centre-back and left-back. The club invested heavily in attack and midfield over the summer, but made few changes to its back line.

With the team targeting another La Liga title and a deep Champions League run, strengthening the defence has become a priority.

Hincapié joined Arsenal permanently last summer for a reported €40 million after impressing during his loan spell.

He has made 25 Premier League appearances and started the Champions League final, but his opportunities have been limited this season.

Fit-again Riccardo Calafiori has moved ahead of him, while Hincapié has largely featured in cup matches or from the bench.

Despite the defender’s restricted playing time, Arsenal are reportedly reluctant to let him go. Mikel Arteta values his versatility, and the club is competing on multiple fronts.

Hincapié has also given no indication that he wants to leave, with injuries having disrupted his efforts to challenge for a regular starting place.

Barcelona could offer him more minutes. Data firm SciSports rates the Catalan club as a better team fit for Hincapié than Arsenal, assigning Barcelona a score of 81 out of 100, compared with Arsenal’s 74.

The assessment reflects Barcelona’s need for experienced defenders, having relied on several academy players this season.

A deal would still be difficult to complete. Hincapié’s estimated transfer value is around €61.5 million, and Arsenal would be under little pressure to sell midway through the campaign.

Barcelona could consider other targets, including Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, but Hincapié remains an attractive option for the Spanish side.
