According to a report by Football London on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Jordan Henderson missed Chelsea's Premier League clash against Manchester United after being ruled out due to illness. The experienced midfielder was unavailable for selection after falling sick ahead of the important fixture.
BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella confirmed that the 36-year-old was absent because of his health condition, explaining why his name was missing from Chelsea's matchday squad.
Henderson's absence came as a setback for manager Xabi Alonso, particularly considering the midfielder's growing importance to the team since recovering from a broken arm in September. The former England captain had established himself as a regular presence in Chelsea's midfield before the illness interrupted his involvement.
Before missing the Manchester United encounter, Henderson had completed 90 minutes in five consecutive matches, demonstrating his importance to Alonso's plans. His experience, tactical awareness and leadership had also strengthened the team's options in the middle of the pitch.
The midfielder made an impressive return from injury, producing an outstanding performance during Chelsea's 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. He scored twice and registered an assist on his home debut, underlining the attacking contribution he could offer alongside his responsibilities in midfield.
With Henderson unavailable against Manchester United, Alonso selected Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to operate together in central midfield. Their partnership provided Chelsea with an alternative combination as the manager adjusted his selection to cope with the unexpected absence.
Lavia also entered the match with renewed confidence after completing his first full 90 minutes in a Chelsea shirt during the Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool earlier in the week.
Alonso had other midfield options available, including Valentin Barco and 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who could offer additional support from the substitutes' bench if required.
Henderson's immediate concern will be recovering fully from his illness and returning to training as soon as possible. Chelsea are scheduled to travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland on Sunday, November 8, and the midfielder will be hoping to regain his fitness before the encounter.
The fixture could hold special significance for Henderson because of his previous association with Sunderland. His return to availability would provide Alonso with another experienced option as Chelsea attempt to build on their victory over Manchester United and maintain consistency in the Premier League.
