Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are reportedly keeping a close eye on Monza forward Gustavo Varela, with TEAMtalk claiming both London clubs watched him in action last weekend.
Varela’s Serie A Impact
The 21-year-old Portuguese joined Monza from Benfica B for around £1.6m, plus €1.2m in potential add-ons. He has made an instant impression in Italy, netting nine league goals to top the Serie A scoring charts. Across 10 appearances, he has contributed 12 goals and assists in total, even in a struggling side.
His latest strike came in a 2-1 loss to Bologna, a result that left Monza 18th and flirting with relegation under Ivan Jurić.
Who Else Wants Varela?
Competition looks stiff. Arsenal are said to be admirers, while Newcastle United, Brighton, Brentford, Fulham, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter are also credited with interest.
Could Monza Be Forced to Sell?
Monza would ordinarily prefer to keep a player so recently signed. However, a poor run of three straight defeats and a growing queue of suitors may make that difficult. A fee only slightly above his £4m Transfermarkt valuation is touted as possible, which would be a bargain for a forward in such form.
Our Take
Spurs and Chelsea both have the resources and pull to make a serious move, but sheer numbers of rivals could drive the price up quickly. If Varela keeps scoring at this rate, a January approach looks plausible. A top Premier League side could do far worse than securing a young, hungry striker before his value rises.
