According to a report by Barca Blaugranes on Monday October 26, 2026, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is targeting a return to the starting lineup after making his first appearance of the 2026/27 season in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
The Dutch international came off the bench during the El Clásico clash at Camp Nou after recovering from a knee injury that had kept him out of action.
Despite being pleased to return to the pitch, De Jong admitted that the result was disappointing, particularly because Barcelona suffered defeat in front of their home supporters.
“I have to say that I feel very disappointed first and foremost,” he told Ziggo Sport. “It is good to be back playing, but losing the Clasico on our own ground always hurts.”
The midfielder also acknowledged that Barcelona failed to produce their best performance, pointing to the passing errors that allowed Real Madrid to take advantage of their opportunities.
He praised Madrid’s attacking quality, highlighting the pace and technical ability of their forwards, who caused problems for Barcelona throughout the encounter.
However, De Jong believes the defeat can serve as a learning experience, insisting that the season remains in its early stages and Barcelona still have plenty to fight for in La Liga and the Champions League.
The 29-year-old is now determined to regain his place in Hansi Flick’s starting XI as quickly as possible.
“I am ready and feel in good shape. Now, it is about gradually increasing my playing time. I have to work on returning to the starting line-up as quickly as possible,” he said.
De Jong added that he is highly motivated and understands that he must prove his quality whenever opportunities arise.
His return could provide Barcelona with a significant boost in midfield as Flick looks to improve the team’s performances following the disappointing El Clásico result.
Barcelona will have a week to prepare for their next La Liga fixture against Alavés on Saturday, October 31. De Jong will hope to build on his comeback and strengthen his case for a starting role, although the club may continue to manage his minutes carefully after his injury.
