Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has stressed the importance of collective commitment and intense pressing if Hansi Flick’s high defensive line is to succeed against Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday, October 24, 2026, the teenage centre-back believes Barcelona must work together and follow Flick’s tactical instructions to prevent their opponents from exploiting the spaces behind the defence.
Barcelona head into the highly anticipated encounter with an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points with a victory over their bitter rivals.
Since arriving at the club, Flick has introduced an aggressive style built around high pressing and a defensive line positioned far up the pitch. Although the approach has produced positive results, it has also attracted criticism because of the space it leaves for opposing attackers to exploit.
However, Cubarsi remains confident in the system, insisting that every player must fully embrace the manager’s philosophy for it to work effectively.
Speaking to DAZN in an interview reported by Mundo Deportivo, the defender explained that maintaining a high defensive line has been a fundamental part of Flick’s approach since his arrival.
He said: “The high defensive line is the philosophy the coach has given us from the beginning, and we have to commit to it completely.”
Cubarsi also emphasised that Barcelona’s forwards have a major responsibility in making the system successful, explaining that their pressing must prevent opponents from building attacks comfortably.
“Up front, we have to press like animals so that the opponents aren’t comfortable. If we have clear ideas and follow this philosophy, we can achieve great things,” he added.
The youngster’s remarks highlight the importance of coordination between Barcelona’s attacking and defensive units. By putting opponents under immediate pressure, the forwards can limit their passing options and reduce the likelihood of the opposition finding space behind the backline.
However, if rival teams manage to bypass the initial press, Barcelona’s defenders could be exposed to dangerous situations, particularly against opponents with the pace and technical ability to exploit open spaces.
That concern will be especially relevant against Real Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe capable of causing serious problems through his speed, movement and ability to attack spaces behind the defence.
Cubarsi understands the risks involved but believes communication, discipline and trust among teammates are essential to ensuring the system functions as intended.
Away from the tactical discussion, the Barcelona defender also made it clear that his attention is firmly on Sunday’s showdown rather than individual awards.
Asked about Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or ambitions and his own chances of winning the Kopa Trophy, Cubarsi indicated that helping Barcelona secure victory against Real Madrid remains his immediate priority.
Barcelona will hope to demonstrate the effectiveness of Flick’s philosophy when they face their arch-rivals in what promises to be a crucial encounter in the La Liga title race.
