Chelsea have strengthened their hopes of progressing in the Messi Cup after recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Inter Milan, with Thiago Silva’s son Iago featuring in the team’s defensive line.
According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, Chelsea are among 16 clubs competing in the second edition of the Messi Cup, a tournament founded by Lionel Messi to bring together some of the world’s leading under-16 teams.
The competition is being held at Inter Miami’s stadium, with the participating sides battling through a group stage before the knockout rounds.
Chelsea were drawn in Group A alongside River Plate, Ajax and Inter Milan. The club have also included several promising players from their under-15 and under-14 squads as they look to compete against some of the strongest youth teams in world football.
The young Blues began their campaign against River Plate on Sunday, with the contest ending in a goalless draw.
However, Chelsea responded impressively in their second group match against Inter Milan on Monday, securing a 4-0 win at Chase Stadium in Miami.
Ezriah Morrison, Ramarn White, Kutendah Mheuka and Eden Mahoney-Smith were all on the scoresheet as Chelsea produced an emphatic attacking display.
Kutendah, the younger brother of Shumaira Mheuka, recently joined Chelsea from Brighton’s academy and has already made an impact in the competition.
Another notable presence in the Chelsea squad is Iago Silva, the 15-year-old son of former Blues defender Thiago Silva.
The youngster has started both group matches at centre-back, gaining valuable experience against international opposition.
Iago should not be confused with his older brother, Isago Silva, who is 17 and also plays in Chelsea’s academy system as a defender for the Under-18s.
Chelsea will face Ajax in their final group-stage fixture on Tuesday night, knowing that victory would guarantee qualification for the Copa Oro, the tournament’s knockout stage featuring the top eight teams.
Ajax have collected three points from their opening two matches, making the encounter an important test for Chelsea’s young players.
