According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday October 24, 2026, former Turkish referee Ahmet Çakar has questioned the decision to name Victor Osimhen as Man of the Match following Galatasaray's 4-2 victory over Lille in the UEFA Champions League.
Osimhen received the individual award after scoring Galatasaray's fourth goal in the encounter at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, but Çakar believes three other players were more deserving of the recognition.
Speaking on the BTV YouTube channel, the former referee expressed his disagreement with the decision, insisting that Osimhen was not the most deserving player despite his contribution to the victory.
"It's unfair that Osimhen was chosen as Man of the Match," Çakar said, according to Habersarikirmizi.
"Osimhen didn't play badly, but there are Barış Alper Yılmaz, Batrakov and Yunus Akgün."
Çakar's comments have sparked a debate over the selection, with the former referee suggesting that Barış Alper Yılmaz, Batrakov and Yunus Akgün made contributions that deserved greater recognition.
However, Osimhen's performance was another positive moment in what has been an impressive campaign for the Nigerian international.
The striker scored his first goal against Lille as Galatasaray secured an entertaining 4-2 win, underlining his importance to the Turkish champions in European competition.
Osimhen has also enjoyed an impressive start to the season, recording seven goals and three assists in eight matches across all competitions, according to the report.
Those statistics highlight his influence in Galatasaray's attack and explain why he continues to attract attention for his performances.
Despite Çakar's criticism, the Man of the Match award remains a recognition of Osimhen's contribution against Lille. The former referee's remarks, however, have raised questions about whether other players had a stronger overall claim to the honour.
Osimhen will now look to maintain his scoring form and help Galatasaray build on their Champions League victory as the campaign continues.
