According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has said he would welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield, although he is unsure whether a reunion would be right for the club.
The former captain believes the defender’s quality would strengthen the squad, but admits the circumstances of his departure could make a return complicated.
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025. However, the England international has struggled to secure regular playing time in Spain. Reports have now linked Liverpool with a possible loan move for the 28-year-old during the January transfer window.
Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard was asked whether his former club should consider bringing the academy graduate back. He made it clear that he would support the move based on the player’s ability.
Gerrard said Alexander-Arnold would improve Liverpool’s squad, adding that his talent was not in question. However, he acknowledged that the defender’s exit from Anfield had left difficult feelings. He questioned whether bringing him back would be right for Liverpool, the manager and the supporters at this stage.
The speculation has grown because Alexander-Arnold has struggled to reproduce the influence he had at Liverpool. Real Madrid have also added Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries to their right-back options.
Despite the competition, neither player has become Jose Mourinho’s undisputed first choice. Federico Valverde has instead featured at right-back in recent matches, with Dumfries reportedly ahead of Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order.
The situation has raised questions about the defender’s future and encouraged Liverpool to consider a temporary return. However, a January departure is far from certain.
Mourinho is reportedly reluctant to allow players to leave during the season. Real Madrid are therefore not keen to approve a loan move, meaning Liverpool’s interest could depend on whether the Spanish club changes its position.
