Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Como midfielder Nico Paz as they consider potential replacements for Bruno Fernandes ahead of the 2027 season.
According to a report by Football Transfers on Saturday, October 24, 2026, uncertainty over Fernandes’ long-term future at Old Trafford has prompted the club to explore options, with the Argentine youngster emerging as a possible target.
Fernandes has recently come under scrutiny following comments that appeared to question Michael Carrick’s tactical approach after United suffered a disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. The situation has added to concerns about whether the club will reach an agreement with their captain over a contract extension.
Paz, meanwhile, has continued to attract attention with his performances in Italy. His impressive display against United, which included two goals and an assist, further strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s exciting young midfield talents.
Transfer insider Nicolo Schira reports that United are monitoring the 22-year-old alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. However, Como are keen to keep hold of the midfielder, whose performances have made him increasingly valuable to the club.
Real Madrid could also play a significant role in determining his next destination. The Spanish giants reportedly retain an €80 million buy-back option in his contract, giving them the opportunity to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Former Spain manager Roberto Martinez, who attended the match as a UEFA technical observer, was particularly impressed by Paz’s contribution against Manchester United.
“He scored two goals and provided an assist for the first three. That’s what a star does. It was like watching Maradona,” Martinez said.
He also highlighted the youngster’s technical ability, balance, precision and composure, praising the quality he demonstrated throughout the encounter.
Despite Madrid’s contractual advantage, a potential return to Spain may not be straightforward. Competition for attacking midfield positions could become a major obstacle, particularly with Jude Bellingham already an important option in that area.
Paz joined Como from Real Madrid in 2024 for €6 million, with the Spanish club initially retaining a €9 million buy-back clause and a 50 per cent sell-on agreement. Como subsequently invested a further €60 million to secure his full rights, according to the report.
Manchester United could potentially offer the Argentine a more direct route into regular first-team football. With Fernandes’ future uncertain, Paz may see Old Trafford as an attractive destination where he could establish himself as a central figure in the team’s midfield.
However, Como’s determination to retain him, interest from other Premier League clubs and Real Madrid’s contractual options mean United could face significant competition if they decide to pursue the midfielder in 2027.
