According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday October 30, 2026, Manchester United have made an enquiry about Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as they consider strengthening their squad, but formal negotiations have not begun.
Journalist Matteo Moretto reported on Radio MARCA that United have also checked on Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios while seeking a midfielder with similar qualities.
The interest in both players remains exploratory rather than a concrete transfer pursuit. United reportedly held meetings during their recent trip to Madrid for the Champions League clash against Atletico. One discussion is believed to have involved an enquiry about signing Fermin.
The Premier League side could be considering midfield reinforcements amid their difficult situation and concerns surrounding captain Bruno Fernandes. However, persuading Barcelona to sell Fermin would be difficult because of his importance to the team. The 23-year-old has become an influential member of the squad, and the Catalan club are unlikely to approve his departure.
Fermin came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and made his breakthrough during the 2023/24 season under former manager Xavi Hernandez. He has continued to develop and is now an important attacking option.
The midfielder has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals and providing four assists. His contributions have made him a valuable presence in Barcelona’s attack.
Chelsea were also interested in signing Fermin in 2025, but Barcelona dismissed the possibility of losing him. The club later extended his contract until 2031 in January this year.
The Spanish international has consistently made his desire to remain at Barcelona clear. He previously described representing the club as a lifelong dream and expressed hope that he could spend his entire career there.
Given his importance to the squad, long-term contract and commitment to the club, Manchester United’s enquiry is unlikely to develop into a serious transfer move. Barcelona are expected to retain the midfielder.
