Back
According to a report by TeamTalk on Saturday October 24, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly made RB Leipzig captain David Raum their leading left-back target for January, with the German international already approving a potential move to Old Trafford.
Whether Michael Carrick remains manager when the winter transfer window opens is uncertain, but United urgently need reinforcements at left-back following their disappointing recruitment during the summer transfer window.
Patrick Dorgu, currently injured, is increasingly viewed internally as a winger rather than a defender, leaving Luke Shaw as their only recognised senior left-back despite his inconsistent fitness record.
INEOS have reportedly acknowledged that failing to sign a left-back and another striker during the summer was a mistake, prompting United’s recruitment department to reconsider potential targets ahead of January.
BBC chief football reporter Simon Stone revealed that United were exploring possible additions after recognising their decision against providing competition for Shaw and supporting striker Benjamin Sesko had proven problematic.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously indicated United could aggressively approach the January window if suitable players became available and results failed to improve sufficiently under their current leadership.
According to The Daily Briefing, Raum has emerged as United’s preferred candidate, ranking ahead of Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert and Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde in their reported recruitment priorities.
TEAMtalk insider Fraser Fletcher reported on October 1 that Raum had already approved joining United, strengthening expectations that the experienced German could move to England during January.
The 28-year-old’s contract with Leipzig expires next summer, meaning January represents an opportunity for the German club to secure a transfer fee before potentially losing him.
Raum is reportedly willing to leave Leipzig six months before his contract expires, while his contractual situation could help United negotiate a relatively affordable transfer agreement.
Although Raum would provide an immediate solution rather than a long-term option, his leadership, experience and attacking qualities could strengthen United’s defensive options considerably during the second half of the season.
As Leipzig captain, Raum would bring valuable leadership to Old Trafford. He has earned 40 international appearances for Germany and possesses considerable experience at both club and international levels.
Furthermore, Raum has registered 28 assists across all competitions during the previous three campaigns, highlighting his attacking contribution and ability to create opportunities from the left flank.
Romano previously described Raum as a dependable defender attracting interest from several major European clubs, adding that United remained interested in strengthening the position and monitoring developments surrounding his contract.
