According to a report by Metro on Friday October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has insisted that the club’s interests will always come first when questioned about Bruno Fernandes’ possible omission from Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Bournemouth.
United suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Italian side delivering an impressive performance against their more experienced opponents in the competition.
Following the loss, Fernandes openly criticised Carrick’s tactical approach, particularly his decision against implementing man-to-man pressing. The Portuguese midfielder suggested responsibility for the tactical shortcomings belonged to the coaching staff.
Asked whether Carrick had made mistakes, Fernandes responded, “That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me.” His comments immediately sparked debate about the relationship between captain and manager.
Carrick also delivered a pointed response after the disappointing performance, stressing that players must demonstrate commitment and work hard in both directions if Manchester United expect to win matches consistently.
The United manager is expected to remain in charge against Bournemouth, although the club are reportedly considering potential replacements as pressure increases following their recent disappointing results.
Fernandes’ public criticism has raised questions about his position in Sunday’s starting lineup and whether he should continue wearing the captain’s armband during this difficult period.
Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has also advised his former teammate to protect himself from unnecessary criticism, suggesting Fernandes should be temporarily removed from the spotlight.
Addressing reporters on Friday, Carrick delivered a determined message about his commitment to restoring Manchester United’s fortunes, insisting he remains completely confident in his ability to improve the team’s performances.
However, the manager remained cautious when questioned about possible disciplinary action against Fernandes following his remarks after the Champions League defeat.
When asked whether Fernandes could be dropped or stripped of the captaincy, Carrick emphasised that collective interests must take priority over individual concerns.
“The most important thing is the team and the dynamics of the squad and the football club,” Carrick explained, reaffirming his commitment to making decisions that benefit Manchester United.
Pressed further about the captaincy situation, Carrick repeated his position, stating, “Whatever the situation is, I will do what is best for the football club.”
The manager declined to reveal whether private discussions had taken place with Fernandes, explaining that he would not disclose unnecessary details while preparing his team for Sunday’s crucial Bournemouth encounter.
