According to a report by Football Insider on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United could face another significant squad overhaul next summer, with Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford among the established players whose futures have come under scrutiny.
Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes the club could use the end of the current campaign as an opportunity to reduce its wage expenditure, potentially creating room for several departures.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson identified four senior players who could be approaching the end of their time at Old Trafford, including captain Bruno Fernandes, whose long-term future has also attracted considerable attention.
Maguire, Shaw and Rashford were specifically highlighted as potential departures, with Borson suggesting that allowing some of the club's highest earners to leave would help ease the financial demands of maintaining the squad.
However, reducing the wage bill could create another major responsibility for United's recruitment department, as several experienced first-team options would need replacing.
The situation could become particularly challenging given the current transfer market, where Borson believes leading players are increasingly commanding fees around the £100million mark.
He warned that United would need to make exceptionally good recruitment decisions if they wanted to compete successfully without regularly spending at the highest end of the market.
Fernandes remains another important figure in the discussion surrounding the club's future squad, although the possibility of losing several established players would extend beyond the Portuguese midfielder.
Supporters have also expressed concerns about other members of the squad, including Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot and Mason Mount, adding to the wider uncertainty surrounding the team's composition.
For United, the potential departures would present both a financial opportunity and a significant sporting challenge.
While removing substantial salaries could provide greater flexibility, replacing experienced players with suitable alternatives would require careful planning and effective recruitment.
The coming summer could therefore become an important period for United as the club considers how to reshape its squad without compromising its ability to compete.
