Barcelona Hope Key Defender Will Recover in Time for El Clasico

According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Barcelona are hopeful that Jules Kounde will recover from his ankle injury in time to face Real Madrid in Sunday's highly anticipated El Clasico. His possible return would provide a timely boost for head coach Hansi Flick as he prepares his team for the crucial encounter.

According to Ramon Salmurri on Catalunya Radio, Barcelona are working towards having the French defender available for the showdown at Camp Nou. However, his participation will depend on how well he responds to treatment and progresses over the next few days.

Kounde sustained a sprain to his left ankle during Barcelona's 5-2 victory over Real Betis. The injury subsequently ruled him out of the Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, which Barcelona lost.

The club are now monitoring his recovery closely as they assess whether he can return to action against their biggest rivals. Barcelona are reportedly considering including him in the matchday squad, although being available would not necessarily mean he would start the game.

The medical team will need to evaluate his condition before making a final decision. Barcelona will be eager to have one of their experienced defenders available, but they must also avoid taking unnecessary risks with his fitness.

Flick is already facing defensive problems ahead of Sunday's encounter, with Eric Garcia expected to be sidelined for several weeks because of a thigh injury. His absence further limits the coach's options as Barcelona prepare for one of the most important matches of the season.

Kounde's absence was felt during the Champions League clash against PSG, highlighting the defensive challenges Barcelona could face if he is unavailable for El Clasico. His ability to operate in different defensive positions makes him a valuable option for Flick, particularly against a strong Real Madrid side.

Nevertheless, Barcelona must be careful not to rush the French international back before he has fully recovered. Playing him too soon could aggravate the injury and leave him facing a longer spell on the sidelines.

Even if Kounde is not fit enough to start, a place on the bench could give Flick an additional defensive option during the match. His availability would strengthen Barcelona's preparations, but the final decision will depend on his recovery in the coming days.
