Nigeria's 16-year-old forward Queen Joseph has expressed her pride in helping the Flamingos reach their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final, insisting that the team is carrying the hopes of the entire African continent and not just Nigeria.
According to a report by FIFA.com on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Joseph made the remarks after playing a key role in Nigeria's historic 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil in Morocco.
The young striker opened the scoring in the 56th minute to give the Flamingos the advantage before Awawu Bashiru took charge with two goals in the 71st and 80th minutes to strengthen Nigeria's position.
Brazil managed to find the net late in the game through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure an important victory and book their place in the final.
Speaking to FIFA after the match, Joseph described the achievement as a special moment in her career, explaining that reaching the final and representing her country on such a stage was a tremendous honour. She also praised her teammates for making history.
“I feel very happy. Playing in the final is a big privilege, representing my country in the final is a big privilege for me. I'm super-proud of myself and my team because we made history,” Joseph said.
The 16-year-old further emphasised that the Flamingos were carrying the hopes of the entire continent with their impressive performances in Morocco.
“We are not here just representing Nigeria, we are here representing Africa as a whole,” she added.
Born on November 24, 2009, Joseph developed her football skills at Fosla Academy in Nigeria and has emerged as one of the exciting young attacking talents in the Flamingos squad.
Her contribution against Brazil proved particularly important, as Nigeria became the first African nation to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
The historic achievement has given the Nigerian youngsters an opportunity to compete for their maiden title in the competition, while also creating a chance to make further history for African women's football.
The Flamingos will now face Japan in the final, where they will be aiming to become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and crown their remarkable campaign with the trophy.
