According to a report by Football London on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Chelsea winger Estevao has received glowing praise from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard following his impressive performance against Manchester United, with the former midfielder admitting that his former club lacks a player with similar qualities.
Manager Xabi Alonso finally handed the Brazilian teenager a starting opportunity against United, something Chelsea supporters had been demanding. Former Blues midfielder Joe Cole had also discussed Estevao with Alonso before the encounter.
Cole revealed on The Dressing Room podcast that he brought his son Harry along for an interview with Alonso, explaining that his son's first question concerned the young Brazilian winger.
Estevao justified the growing excitement surrounding his selection with an impressive performance, although he was unfortunate not to find the net after having two efforts ruled out for offside. Alonso also embraced him when he was substituted.
Gerrard was particularly impressed with the youngster's direct attacking approach and willingness to shoot, suggesting Liverpool could benefit from having someone with those characteristics in their attacking department.
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard said: “He’s really exciting. He’s great to watch, your typical Brazilian; flair, quality. I love that he’s direct; I really like that he’s hungry to get shots off.”
The former Liverpool captain also criticised his old club's attacking approach, explaining that their forwards sometimes look for unnecessary additional passes instead of attempting shots when opportunities appear.
However, Estevao was not completely flawless against United. He missed an opportunity in the first half when a pass towards a teammate might have been the better decision.
His impressive display could create another selection dilemma for Alonso, particularly when Joao Pedro returns from injury. The Brazilian striker is expected to miss Chelsea's upcoming Sunderland encounter.
With Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro competing for attacking positions, Alonso could face a difficult decision between Estevao and Pedro Neto for the remaining starting place.
Gerrard acknowledged the challenge, saying: “He is going to give Xabi a problem when Joao Pedro comes back. Neto is a great player, but five doesn’t go into that front four. He’s done himself no harm.”
