Real Madrid Closely Monitoring Premier League Goalkeeper As Potential Courtois Successor

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Real Madrid have identified Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a possible long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois as the Spanish club begins considering its future options in goal.

The 24-year-old Dutch international has attracted attention following his performances in the Premier League, with Madrid reportedly monitoring his development as they assess potential candidates for the position in the coming years.

Verbruggen recently delivered an impressive performance against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on October 31. The Brighton goalkeeper produced seven saves to help his team secure a 1-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side. His contribution was particularly important as Manchester City created opportunities but failed to find a way past him.

The performance further demonstrated his ability to deal with pressure against some of the strongest attacking teams in England. His reactions, positioning and confidence between the posts have helped him establish himself as one of Brighton’s important players.

Verbruggen joined Brighton from Belgian club Anderlecht in 2023 and has gradually developed into the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. His progress at club level has also earned him regular opportunities with the Netherlands national team, giving him valuable experience in international football.

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in several qualities he possesses, including his quick reflexes, composure and ability to distribute the ball accurately. These attributes could make him a suitable candidate for a club that expects its goalkeepers to contribute both defensively and during the build-up of attacks.

Meanwhile, Courtois remains Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper at 34. The Belgian has continued to play an important role since joining the Spanish giants and remains an experienced figure in the squad managed by Jose Mourinho.

However, with Courtois’ current contract scheduled to expire in 2027, Madrid must consider their long-term plans. Although discussions over a possible contract extension are ongoing, the club are reportedly keeping alternative options under consideration.

For now, there is no indication that Madrid have made a formal move for Verbruggen or are preparing an immediate transfer. Their reported interest suggests that the Brighton goalkeeper is being monitored as part of their future planning.

Whether he eventually gets the opportunity to replace Courtois at the Santiago Bernabeu will depend on Madrid’s decisions and how his career develops in the coming seasons.
