Andoni Iraola names two Liverpool stars unlikely to face Chelsea

According to a report by Metro on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has revealed that Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz are unlikely to feature in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea at Anfield.

The Reds will host Chelsea in the fourth round of the competition as they look to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool head into the encounter after recording a 2-0 victory over Brighton in the Premier League, while Chelsea are looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking ahead of the game, Iraola provided an update on the fitness of several Liverpool players, with Florian Wirtz expected to have a better chance of being available than Szoboszlai and Munoz.

“We still have to wait, we train later. We want to use this last day,” Iraola said. “He was quite fine, Florian – I’m quite optimistic that he will be available.

“And with Dom and Victor, I’m not so sure. I don’t want to say no, but I think it’s going to be more difficult than Florian, yes.”

Szoboszlai has been struggling with a hamstring problem, while Munoz is also dealing with an injury that has affected his availability in recent matches.

Wirtz, meanwhile, picked up an ankle problem during Liverpool’s victory over Brighton, but Iraola remains hopeful that the German midfielder will recover in time for the Chelsea encounter.

Liverpool are also without several long-term absentees, including Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, leaving Iraola with decisions to make as he manages his squad during a busy run of fixtures.

The Liverpool boss confirmed that changes would be made to his starting line-up but insisted that his team would approach the match with the intention of winning.

“There will definitely be changes. But we want to win the game, we want to be competitive,” he said.

Iraola acknowledged that facing Chelsea was a difficult draw but stressed that Liverpool must earn their place in the next round.

“We want to be in the next round. We’ve been unlucky in the draw, we are playing Chelsea. They have been unlucky also,” he added.

Liverpool will hope Wirtz is fit enough to feature, while the potential absence of Szoboszlai and Munoz could force Iraola to explore alternative options against Chelsea.
