Nigeria's Chukwueze Begins Rehabilitation After Successful Hip Surgery

According to a report by PUNCH on November 5, 2026, Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has returned to Italy to begin rehabilitation after undergoing successful surgery on his left hip. The injury is expected to keep the Nigerian international out of action for an extended period.

AC Milan confirmed that the operation took place in London and was performed by Professor Ernest Schilders, with the club’s doctor, Dr Stefano Mazzoni, present. The procedure addressed a ruptured tendon in the tensor fasciae latae muscle in Chukwueze’s left hip. Milan described the surgery as completely successful and said the 27-year-old would return to Italy to start his recovery programme.

Despite the positive outcome of the operation, the winger’s absence could extend beyond the initial expectations. Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Chukwueze might not be fit enough to resume training by December. Milan have not provided an official timetable for his return, but reports indicate that he could remain unavailable until 2027.

The setback comes after Chukwueze made a promising start to the 2026/27 season. He featured in seven Serie A matches, registering two assists, and also made one appearance in the Europa League. His early involvement had offered an opportunity to build momentum before the injury interrupted his campaign.

Chukwueze joined AC Milan from Villarreal in 2023 but found it difficult to secure a regular role at the Italian club. He subsequently moved to Fulham on loan last season, making 23 Premier League appearances. During that spell, he scored three goals and supplied four assists.

Fulham ultimately chose not to activate the €26 million purchase option included in the loan agreement, meaning the winger returned to Milan. He had been working to establish himself again at the Italian side under manager Ruben Amorim before the injury forced him to stop.

His recovery will now be closely monitored by the club, while the uncertain timeline leaves Milan without one of their attacking options for a significant part of the campaign. Chukwueze will focus on rehabilitation in the hope of returning to competitive football once fully fit and regain his previous sharpness.
