Steven Gerrard joins Zidane in praising ‘fantastic’ Chelsea star after his best-ever display

According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the former Liverpool captain praised Lavia's growing influence at Chelsea, describing his display against Manchester United as arguably his finest since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea secured all three points on Saturday, moving back into the Premier League's top four. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring before Cole Palmer doubled the advantage from the penalty spot. Manchester United's difficult afternoon was compounded when Lisandro Martinez received a red card, leaving his team with 10 players.

Despite the goals attracting attention, Lavia was among the most impressive performers on the pitch. The Belgian midfielder recorded 23 defensive contributions, which was 12 more than the next player. He also played a crucial role in Chelsea's opening goal by winning possession in midfield before setting up Rogers.

Gerrard was particularly impressed by the understanding between Lavia and Moises Caicedo, believing their partnership provides Chelsea with considerable strength and stability in the middle of the pitch.

"Lavia is really important for Chelsea. I think he, alongside Moises Caicedo, gives them a really strong midfield base. They're two top midfielders; I really like the base that they give to Chelsea," Gerrard said.

Speaking during Monday's edition of Overlap Daily, the former England international also highlighted Lavia's contribution to Rogers' goal, pointing out his ability to recover possession and immediately create attacking opportunities.

"A strength to go and attack from. Lavia was fantastic for the Rogers goal, stealing the ball," he added.

Gerrard is not the only celebrated football personality impressed by the 22-year-old. Zidane previously praised the Chelsea midfielder after watching his assist for Belgium against France during the international break.

"I really liked his pass; I watched it again in the changing room at half-time, during the analysis. He's a quality player," Zidane said.

Meanwhile, Lavia's impressive display has created an important selection dilemma for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso ahead of Sunday's encounter against Sunderland.

Alonso must decide whether to continue with Lavia alongside Caicedo or restore Jordan Henderson to the starting eleven following his recent illness. The manager also has defensive concerns involving Wesley Fofana and must consider how best to include Estevao in his attacking plans.

Lavia's latest performance has strengthened his argument for a regular starting position as Chelsea prepare for their upcoming Premier League fixtures.
