According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday November 4, 2026, former Manchester United defender Ashley Young has urged the club to make an immediate decision on Lisandro Martinez's future, insisting that the Argentine should be sold during the January transfer window.
Young believes Martinez is no longer contributing enough to the team and has called on the Old Trafford hierarchy to part ways with the 28-year-old defender.
His comments follow Manchester United's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, where Martinez was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
The Argentine was initially booked for a foul on Morgan Rogers before receiving his second yellow card for catching Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana with an elbow during a corner-kick situation following a VAR review.
Speaking on Prime Video Sport, Young made his position clear, arguing that Manchester United should not hesitate to move the defender on in January.
"If I was the manager at the club or if I was one of the owners, I'd be looking at January and saying, 'get him out now'. Just get rid of him. Because he's not bringing anything to the football club. He's not performing," Young said.
Martinez's dismissal against Chelsea increased the pressure on him, particularly as Manchester United continued their disappointing run of results.
The defeat extended the Red Devils' winless streak to nine matches in all competitions, leaving head coach Michael Carrick under considerable pressure to turn the team's fortunes around.
There are also questions surrounding Martinez's long-term future at Old Trafford because he is currently in the final year of his contract, although Manchester United have the option to extend his deal by another 12 months.
The defender's relationship with the club's hierarchy has also attracted attention following his public statement after the 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, in which he criticised technical director Jason Wilcox and the club's summer recruitment.
Meanwhile, Martinez was left out of Manchester United's starting lineup for their Champions League meeting with Roma on Wednesday, November 4, with Carrick preferring young defender Ayden Heaven.
Asked to explain his decision before the match, Carrick insisted that selecting his starting team involved difficult choices because of the quality available in his squad.
"You've got to pick a team. We've got a good squad. We've got decisions to make. We've changed one or two in recent weeks," the United head coach said.
Martinez's omission has further raised questions about his position in Carrick's plans, although the manager did not suggest that the decision was directly connected to the defender's recent disciplinary problems.
Manchester United will now turn their attention to their Premier League meeting with Aston Villa on Sunday, November 8, as Carrick looks to secure an important result.
