Racing Santander could face sanction after fans throw objects onto the pitch vs Real Madrid

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Monday November 2, 2026, Racing Santander could face disciplinary action following their 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid after some supporters threw objects onto the pitch during Sunday's La Liga encounter at El Sardinero.

The incident occurred towards the end of the match after referee Martinez Munuera overturned a penalty awarded to the home side following a VAR review.

Real Madrid had already benefited from an early penalty decision involving Kylian Mbappe, which had angered Racing supporters. However, frustration among the home fans increased when Aurelien Tchouameni was judged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.

Munuera initially pointed to the spot, giving Racing an opportunity to get back into the contest. However, after consulting VAR, the referee reversed his decision because Tchouameni's contact with the ball was not considered sufficient to warrant a penalty.

The decision sparked protests from the stands, with supporters directing their anger towards the referee and chanting against Real Madrid. The situation later escalated when a lighter was thrown from the crowd onto the playing surface.

According to reports, Racing Santander could now find themselves in trouble over the incident. Although the lighter did not hit or injure anyone, throwing objects onto the pitch is prohibited because of the potential danger to players, referees and other match officials.

The Spanish club will now have to wait for Munuera's official match report, as the referee is expected to include details of the incident. Any disciplinary action will depend on whether the incident is formally recorded.

A significant punishment is not expected if the report is anything to go by. Deportivo La Coruna previously received a €3,000 fine and a warning of possible stadium closure after several objects were thrown onto the pitch.

Racing Santander could therefore face a similar financial penalty if the incident is included in the referee's report and the relevant authorities decide to take action.

The incident adds to the tension surrounding Real Madrid's away matches this season, with refereeing decisions involving the Spanish giants continuing to generate protests and controversy among opposition supporters.
