Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart is expected to start at right-back against Real Madrid on Sunday after his performance in the Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 23, 2026, the 19-year-old has impressed manager Hansi Flick, who is reportedly ready to give him another chance in the Clasico. Jules Kounde's fitness concerns have also increased Espart's chances of starting.
Espart impressed against PSG by limiting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's influence and scoring a goal. His display showed that he could contribute both defensively and in attack.
AS journalist Javi Miguel reported that the young defender had done enough to convince Flick to consider him for Sunday's match. Espart had previously impressed the Barcelona manager at left-back while competing with experienced players such as Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde.
His performance at right-back against PSG has now strengthened his chances of earning more playing time.
Barcelona will face another test against Real Madrid, although Vinicius Junior is suspended. Espart could come up against Yan Diomande, who would provide a different challenge for the teenager.
Despite concerns about his fitness, Espart is expected to be available. He had experienced quadriceps discomfort before the PSG match and needed help from a physiotherapist to ease the tension. He also took a heavy knock to his ankle during the game, but reports suggest neither problem is likely to keep him out of Sunday's encounter.
Kounde's ankle sprain has further improved Espart's chances of starting. The French defender is unlikely to be fit enough to begin the match, even if he returns to the squad. He could instead start on the bench and play limited minutes if needed.
Unless there is a late change, Barcelona could keep the same defensive arrangement they used against PSG, with Espart at right-back, Cancelo on the left, and Pau Cubarsi partnering Gerard Martin in central defence.
Another strong performance could help Espart compete for a regular place in the team when Barcelona's senior defenders return to full fitness.
