According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as they begin considering possible long-term replacements for Thibaut Courtois.
The Spanish giants have reportedly identified the 24-year-old Netherlands international as a potential candidate to take over from Courtois, whose current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu is expected to expire in 2027. The club are believed to be assessing different options as they prepare for the future of their goalkeeping department.
Verbruggen's impressive performances in the Premier League have attracted attention from several observers, with his recent display against Manchester City further strengthening his reputation. The Brighton shot-stopper delivered an outstanding performance at the Etihad Stadium on October 31, making seven important saves to help his team secure a memorable 1-0 victory over Pep Guardiola's side.
His contribution was particularly significant because Manchester City created several scoring opportunities but struggled to overcome his resistance. Verbruggen demonstrated excellent reflexes, strong positioning and composure throughout the encounter, showing his ability to deliver under pressure against elite opposition.
The Dutch goalkeeper joined Brighton from Belgian side Anderlecht in 2023 and has steadily developed into the club's established first-choice option. His consistent performances have also strengthened his position within the Netherlands national team, where he continues to earn opportunities at international level.
Real Madrid are reportedly interested in several aspects of his game, particularly his shot-stopping ability, distribution and confidence when playing with the ball at his feet. These qualities are important for Madrid, who traditionally expect their goalkeepers to contribute beyond making saves by helping initiate attacking movements from the back.
Meanwhile, Courtois remains an important member of the squad managed by Jose Mourinho. Despite being 34, the Belgian goalkeeper continues to occupy the first-choice position and has maintained his influence since joining the Spanish club.
However, his contract situation has encouraged Madrid to examine possible alternatives. Although discussions over a potential extension are reportedly continuing, the club are not ruling out other candidates as part of their long-term recruitment strategy.
For now, Madrid have not reportedly made a formal approach to Brighton regarding Verbruggen. Nevertheless, his recent performances have placed him among the goalkeepers being monitored as the Spanish side considers its options beyond Courtois.
