Why Super Eagles Star Raised His Hands Instead Of Celebrating His Goal Last Night

According to a report by Premium Times on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen drew attention during Galatasaray’s 4-2 victory over Lille in the UEFA Champions League after raising his hands towards the home supporters instead of celebrating his goal in the usual manner.

The Nigerian forward scored in the 61st minute of Wednesday night’s encounter, helping Galatasaray secure an important away victory. However, his reaction after finding the net became a major talking point, with the gesture appearing to reflect his enduring connection with his former club.

Rather than joining his teammates in celebrating, Osimhen raised his hands towards the Lille supporters in what appeared to be a gesture of appreciation for the fans who backed him during his time at the French club.

Osimhen played for Lille during the 2019/2020 season after joining the team from Belgian side Charleroi. His performances quickly established him as one of the emerging talents in European football.

During his time at Lille, the striker scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions. His pace, finishing ability and attacking intelligence made him a key figure in the team and attracted interest from several major European clubs.

His impressive displays earned him a move to Napoli in 2020, where he continued his development into one of Europe’s most formidable forwards. He subsequently played a crucial role in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign in the 2022/2023 season, further enhancing his reputation as an elite goalscorer.

Consequently, Wednesday’s return to face Lille carried special significance for Osimhen, as it brought him back against the club where he made considerable progress in his professional career.

His decision to acknowledge the home supporters after scoring suggested that he still values the experience and support he received during his spell in France.

Meanwhile, Osimhen’s goal proved important for Galatasaray, who were seeking their first victory in this season’s Champions League campaign. The Turkish side delivered an impressive attacking performance to secure all three points.

The encounter produced an entertaining first half, with both teams finding the net. Yunus Akgün gave Galatasaray an early lead before Lille responded through Soriba Diaoune, who scored twice to put the French side ahead.

Aleksey Batrakov subsequently restored parity before the break, leaving both teams level as they headed into the second half.

Galatasaray returned with greater determination after the interval and regained control of the contest, establishing a 3-2 lead before Osimhen scored the decisive goal to complete the 4-2 victory.

The Nigerian striker was named Player of the Match in recognition of his influential performance and contribution to Galatasaray’s European campaign.

Beyond his goal, Osimhen troubled Lille’s defence with his movement and attacking presence throughout the encounter.

He also received a warm reception from Lille supporters when he was substituted towards the closing stages of the match, highlighting the positive impression he had left during his time at the club.

Ultimately, Osimhen’s reaction after scoring demonstrated that professional success does not necessarily erase a player’s connection with a former team. While his goal helped Galatasaray secure a valuable Champions League victory, his gesture towards the Lille supporters served as a sign of appreciation for a club that played an important role in his development.

His performance reinforced his importance to the Turkish side, while his response to the home fans showed that his time in France remains a meaningful part of his football journey.
