Steven Gerrard Warns Xabi Alonso That Chelsea Star Is About To Give Him Joao Pedro Problem

Steven Gerrard believes Estevao Willian’s impressive performance against Manchester United will create a selection dilemma for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso when Joao Pedro returns from injury.

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday 3 November 2026, the former Liverpool captain praised the Brazilian winger following Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday and delivered an impressive performance before being substituted after 87 minutes.

The 19-year-old troubled United’s defence with his direct running and attacking intent, although two efforts were ruled out for offside.

He also registered six shots, the joint-highest total by a Chelsea player in a single match this season.

Gerrard was particularly impressed by the teenager’s willingness to take on defenders and attempt shots rather than constantly look for an additional pass.

Speaking on Overlap Daily, the former England midfielder highlighted Estevao’s attacking qualities and said his approach could benefit Chelsea.

Gerrard also warned that Alonso would face a difficult decision when Joao Pedro becomes available again, with several players competing for places in the attacking positions.

Gerrard said: "So, he's desperate to impress the manager. And he's going to give Xabi a problem when Joao Pedro comes back, because Pedro Neto's a great player as well, but five doesn't go into that front four, so it's going to be interesting.

"But he's done himself no harm at all in terms of his own individual performance, Estevao."

The Chelsea forward is currently recovering from a thigh injury and is expected to remain unavailable until after the international break. His absence has provided Estevao with an opportunity to impress, which he appears to have taken.

However, competition for places is already intense at Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have started every Premier League match this season, while Pedro Neto has also been a regular member of Alonso’s starting line-up.

With Joao Pedro expected to return, the Chelsea manager will have to decide how best to accommodate his attacking options without disrupting the team's balance.

Estevao had struggled for regular opportunities during the opening months of the campaign, making fewer than 50 minutes of league appearances before his start against United.

Alonso had maintained that the youngster would eventually receive his chance, insisting there was plenty of football still to be played.

His display against United has strengthened his case for another start, potentially beginning with Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland.
