According to a report by Football London on Thursday, 22 October 2026, Anders Limpar, a former Arsenal winger, has suggested that Mikel Arteta play Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres in a two-forward formation, saying that Gyokeres is more effective in that configuration.
Changing Arsenal's typical formation—which consists of a central striker supported by wingers—could help Gyokeres perform better, according to Limpar.
Despite joining Arsenal from Sporting last year to bolster their attack, Gyokeres has not been able to cement his place as a starting forward due to Kai Havertz's preference.
The Gunners have used the Swedish striker 64 times in all competitions, and he has scored 21 goals and added 4 assists.
Before Saturday's Premier League match against Everton, his performance in Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich gave Arsenal hope. Gyokeres and Declan Rice worked well together, and Rice scored the late equalizer for Arsenal.
Limpar, who was Gyokeres's coach at Swedish club Brommapojkarna when he was younger, thinks the striker would be more effective in a two-forward configuration.
He was brought up in the Swedish system, playing with two forwards, and when I see Viktor playing for Sweden, he's much better, the former Arsenal winger told Betarades.
Being a target player isn't his strong suit, so he struggles when playing alone up front.
Gyokeres, according to Limpar, is at his best when he is not expected to lead the line but rather to run behind defenders and take advantage of counter-attacking opportunities.
"He requires a player who is an excellent target so he can play off of them because he is good going forward, chasing the ball, and a threat on counterattacks," he added.
With Havertz supposedly having a poor run of form as of late, the former Arsenal player thought Gyokeres should be considered for a starting role.
"Indeed, I believe he ought to start as a starter if you ask me whether I want him to play," Limpar stated.
Nonetheless, he did concede that Arteta possesses knowledge that supporters do not, such as the fitness levels and training performances of the players.
"Arteta is currently starting Kai Havertz because he believes he's better for Arsenal right now, and Viktor will just have to wait for his chance and seize it when it comes," Limpar told the press.
