Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi delivered an impressive performance as Coventry City defeated Sunderland 3-1, earning the Man of the Match award following his important contribution to the victory.
According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Awoniyi played a major role in Coventry's attacking display, particularly during the first half when he scored the team's second goal.
Coventry began the encounter positively and took the lead in the 17th minute through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto. The hosts continued to put pressure on Sunderland, with Awoniyi eventually extending their advantage in the 37th minute.
The Nigerian forward demonstrated his individual ability by dribbling past several opposing defenders inside the penalty area before attempting a shot at goal. His effort took a deflection and beat Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs, putting Coventry 2-0 ahead.
Awoniyi's movement, strength and ability to create opportunities caused problems for Sunderland's defence throughout his involvement in the match. His goal also gave Coventry a comfortable advantage going into the half-time interval.
The hosts maintained their attacking approach after the restart and added a third goal in the 52nd minute. Jack Rudoni received a pass from Victor Torp before shooting from the edge of the penalty area. His effort took a deflection and found the back of the net.
Sunderland managed to pull one goal back in the 67th minute when Enzo Le Fee converted a penalty following a VAR review.
Despite the visitors' attempt to reduce the deficit further, Coventry remained in control and protected their lead until the final whistle.
Although Awoniyi did not add another goal, his first-half contribution proved important in establishing Coventry's advantage. His performance earned him the Man of the Match recognition as the hosts secured an impressive 3-1 victory.
