Three Reasons Chelsea Were Right To Sell Nicolas Jackson Despite His Aston Villa Form

Chelsea’s decision to sell Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa continues to attract attention after the striker scored twice in his new club’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Jackson’s impressive performance has prompted questions about whether Chelsea made the right decision to let him leave, particularly with Joao Pedro currently sidelined through injury.

However, there are three reasons why Chelsea’s decision to sell the Senegal international could still prove beneficial under manager Xabi Alonso.

The first concerns Pedro’s position in the team. When fully fit, the Brazilian is expected to lead Chelsea’s attack, leaving Jackson facing competition for regular starts.

Both forwards are capable of dropping deep and linking up with teammates, but Pedro has demonstrated greater efficiency in front of goal. During Jackson’s best season at Chelsea, the striker scored 14 Premier League goals in 2,810 minutes.

Pedro scored one more league goal last season while playing 136 fewer minutes, highlighting his productivity when given opportunities.

Chelsea may therefore have struggled to keep Jackson satisfied if he had remained as a backup option, potentially creating unnecessary tension within the squad.

The second reason is the financial benefit of the transfer.

Chelsea reportedly signed Jackson for around £30 million in 2024 before selling him to Aston Villa for approximately £65 million.

The deal represented a substantial profit for the club, providing funds that could be reinvested in other areas of the squad.

With Chelsea facing financial pressures, including the absence of a front-of-shirt sponsor during the summer, player sales remain an important part of their transfer strategy.

The third concern relates to Jackson’s finishing ability.

Although the striker has shown quality in his movement, hold-up play and link-up contributions, his conversion rate has raised questions about whether he can become an elite goalscorer.

During his debut Premier League season, Jackson scored 14 goals from an expected goals figure of 19.86, according to Understat. In the following campaign, he recorded 10 goals from an expected goals total of 13.83.

Those figures suggest he missed several opportunities that a more clinical striker might have converted.
