Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has backed Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman to rediscover his best form, insisting he retains strong faith in the Nigerian despite what he described as a difficult start to the season.

Lookman has struggled to secure regular playing time in recent weeks, featuring for just 14 minutes in Atletico’s 2-0 victory over Levante last Saturday. However, he has recorded two goals and one assist in 14 appearances across all competitions, including a goal and an assist in three Champions League outings.

Speaking ahead of Atletico’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich, Simeone urged the forward not to become frustrated by his current situation, pointing to similar experiences involving teammates Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann.

“He didn’t start as he would have liked, but last season Julian also went through that and came out of it. And Griezmann too,” the Argentine said.

Simeone also highlighted Lookman’s ability to take on opponents in attacking areas, noting that the Nigerian was among the players who attempted the most one-on-one duels in the final third.

“I trust him a lot. I don’t want him to get frustrated because he’s not going through his best moment. It’s part of life, part of the game, part of football,” he added.

The Atletico manager expressed confidence that the forward would continue working until his performances improved, insisting that the goal that could help restore his confidence would eventually come.

Lookman joined Atletico from Atalanta, where his impressive performances helped establish him as one of Nigeria’s leading players in European football.
