Ajax teenager Abdellah Ouazane demands more from himself despite six-goal win

Abdellah Ouazane scored no goal but supplied an assist as Ajax secured an emphatic 6-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the Conference League on Thursday – yet the 17-year-old forward remained dissatisfied with his own display.

The Morocco international, who has been described by Ronald de Boer as a potential future world star, produced the pass for Tolu Arokodare to put Ajax 2-1 ahead in Denmark. However, Ouazane said his contribution did not meet his own standards.

Michel Sanchez had worked with Ouazane throughout the week in preparation for starting him on the right against FC Midtjylland, the coach told Ziggo Sport before the match.

“I can play everywhere – today, on the right,” Ouazane said after the final whistle.

The teenager was then direct in his assessment of his performance.

“Honestly, I didn’t find my game convincing,” Ouazane said.

“I dropped back a lot today, whereas I love attacking. After the sending-off, I had a few more chances, but I didn’t make enough of them count. I could have done better, but the good goals come from collective work.”

Asked about his ability to assess his own performances, he added: “You can simply feel it.”

His assist for Arokodare did provide a positive moment, but Ouazane insisted he would analyse the entire match rather than focus on one contribution.

“It feels good in the moment. But if you look at the game in detail, there was a lot of room for improvement. That is how I analyse every match,” he said.

“If I think I played well, I say so. I believe I have always worked that way; it helps me a lot. I also know what I need to improve when I absolutely have to get myself out of a difficult situation. It is up to me to do that.”

Ouazane was also named this week among the nominees for the African Talent of the Year award. He was one of the three finalists last year and has been nominated again.

“Last year, I was already among the three finalists and now I have been nominated again; I am alongside some big names. I hope this time will be the one,” said the Ajax player, who has once again been selected for Morocco.

“I will give everything on Sunday and I will let you know on Monday.”

Former Netherlands international striker Wim Kieft was impressed by the teenager’s post-match interview.

“He is completely comfortable in front of the camera; that is really impressive for a 17-year-old. And when you discover his personality... He expresses himself very well. It seems as though he has already given a hundred interviews,” Kieft said.

De Boer added: “I think he has the potential to become a world star, if he stays fit. He is genuinely very mature for his age.”
