Tottenham Hotspur secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as Mathys Tel scored a superb late goal and Cole Palmer was sent off in a frustrating evening for Xabi Alonso’s side.
The victory marked only Tottenham’s second Premier League win away to Chelsea in 36 years, ending another difficult chapter in their record against their London rivals.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders’ unfortunate own goal broke the deadlock in the 77th minute before French forward Tel sealed the points with a brilliant individual effort in the 87th minute.
Penders, making his first Premier League start for Chelsea after Emi Martinez suffered a fractured jaw against Everton, punched the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with a corner under pressure from Tottenham defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
Tel then produced the decisive moment of quality, driving forward from around the halfway line before unleashing a low shot from approximately 25 yards to double Tottenham’s advantage.
The goal was Tel’s first for Tottenham since May 11, ending his wait to find the net for the north London club.
Chelsea’s difficult evening was compounded by Palmer’s dismissal in the 80th minute.
The England midfielder received two yellow cards within a nine-minute period. His first booking followed a challenge on Mateus Fernandes, while the second came after a late tackle on Conor Gallagher.
Palmer’s sending-off left Chelsea with 10 men during the closing stages and added to the frustration of a home defeat in which they had initially created promising opportunities.
Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky made important saves to deny Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto as Chelsea searched for the opening goal.
The Blues also missed the influence of injured striker Joao Pedro, with Morgan Rogers struggling to make an impact in a false-nine role.
The match was played in torrential rain, with tensions rising throughout a fiery London derby.
The result represents another encouraging step for Tottenham, who have now recorded two victories in a week.
They followed up their 3-1 home victory over Coventry City on Monday with the impressive performance at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham’s record at Chelsea has historically been poor. Before Saturday’s match, their only league victory at Stamford Bridge in the preceding 36 visits had come in April 2018, when Mauricio Pochettino’s team won 3-1 against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.
The previous victory before that came in February 1990.
The latest result will provide a significant boost to Tottenham’s confidence as they look to improve their position in the Premier League table.
For Chelsea, the defeat represents a setback for Alonso, who must also prepare for the Carabao Cup last-16 meeting with Liverpool without the suspended Palmer.
Three other Premier League matches were completed on Saturday, with Aston Villa recording an important victory over Manchester City, Arsenal beating Everton and Fulham edging Coventry City.
The action continues on Sunday, October 25, with five matches scheduled:
The weekend’s results could have further implications for the Premier League title race, European qualification places and the battle to avoid relegation.
