LIVERPOOL, November 2026 — Greek winger Christos Tzolis returned from injury to start for Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, as Kai Havertz scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Liverpool.
It was the first Premier League win for Arsenal at Anfield since 2012, ending a 14-year wait. Mikel Arteta’s champions also stay three points clear at the top of the table.
Before kick-off, the club said in its pre-match team news that Tzolis had missed six games with a hamstring injury. He went straight back into the starting line-up.
Arteta picked the Greece international for Arsenal at Anfield in a front three with Havertz and Noni Madueke.
In the first half, Tzolis led several counter-attacks. One deep cross forced Alisson Becker into a save from Madueke.
His best chance to double the lead for Arsenal at Anfield came in the 73rd minute. Tzolis hit a fine first-time shot with his right foot, yet Alisson dived to tip it away.
Tzolis came off after 84 minutes. Later that night, he posted five photos with a short message: “Back on the grass and a big three points.”
Fans quickly praised his display on social media, where many hailed the return of the winger.
Tzolis joined Arsenal in a £34 million move from Club Brugge in July. Then, on his league debut in August, he set up two goals against Coventry.
Havertz struck in the 16th minute after Declan Rice cut in a low cross from the right. The German forward then arrived at the back post to tap it in.
Two minutes later, Liverpool wanted a penalty for a shirt pull on Alexander Isak in the box. However, the referee gave nothing.
Florian Wirtz then hit the woodwork with a direct free kick in the 40th minute. Trey Nyoni also impressed in midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister.
Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas, who captained Liverpool in October, came off the bench in the 82nd minute. Soon after, Victor Munoz headed his cross weakly into the arms of David Raya, Liverpool’s match report said.
Because Manchester City lost 1-0 to Brighton on Saturday, the win for Arsenal at Anfield kept the gap at three points in the Premier League table. Next, Arsenal visit Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday.
