Cole Campbell stunner crowns Elversberg's emphatic win over Mainz

Cole Campbell's jaw-dropping scissor kick in the closing stages crowned a 4-1 win for Elversberg against Mainz on Friday, after Felix Keidel had paved the way for victory with a superb early free-kick.

Elversberg 4-1 Mainz
Goals: 1-0 Keitel 7’, 2-0 Onyeka 26’ (assist: Mokwa), 3-0 Krattenmacher 45’+1, 4-0 Campbell 90’+1 (assist: Mickelson), 4-1 Hollerbach 90'+2
Sent off: Posch 90'+5

Both Elversberg and Mainz arrived at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde with 10 points from their first seven matchdays. Mainz's Robin Zentner returned in goal for the first time since Matchday 3, while head coach Vincent Wagner made five changes to his starting line-up following a midweek DFB Cup exit, restoring Maximilian Rohr, Felix Keidel, Francis Onyeka, Maurice Krattenmacher and David Mokwa to the side.

Keidel sparks early Elversberg surge

Elversberg took control from the off, and after Phillipp Mwene was booked for a foul on Lukas Petkov inside four minutes, the hosts made the breakthrough. In the seventh minute, Keidel curled a free-kick from just outside the box around the wall and into the net.

Mainz tried to respond with corners through Nadiem Amiri, but could not trouble Nicolas Kristof's goal. Onyeka then doubled the lead in the 26th minute, finishing from inside the box after Mokwa had driven through midfield, for his first Bundesliga goal.

Danny da Costa was booked for fouling Onyeka in the 33rd minute, and deep into stoppage time Krattenmacher reacted first to a poorly cleared Keidel corner, controlling the ball before slotting it into the far corner to make it 3-0 at the break.

Campbell's late flourish seals the result

Mainz started the second half with more possession but struggled to create danger. A Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer effort was ruled out by the video assistant referee in the 66th minute for offside after Zentner had picked him out.

Elversberg brought on substitutes including Campbell, who struck in stoppage time with an acrobatic to make it 4-0. Moments later, Benedict Hollerbach pulled one back for Mainz from close range after Königsdörffer's pass, with the away side's night worsening further as Stefan Posch was shown a second yellow card, and sent off, in stoppage time.
