Manchester United consider move for Nigeria’s defender

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as they explore options to strengthen their defence ahead of a possible transfer window overhaul.

The Nigeria international has attracted interest from several European clubs following his performances for Fulham, with Manchester United emerging as one of the sides monitoring his situation.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, United are among the clubs interested in signing the 26-year-old, who has established himself as a regular figure in Fulham’s defence.

Bassey emerges as defensive option

United’s reported interest comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Lisandro Martinez, who is said to be keen on leaving Old Trafford.

The potential departure of the Argentine defender could prompt the Premier League side to seek reinforcements, with Bassey among the names being considered.

Como defender Jacobo Ramon has also been linked with United, according to reports cited by the Daily Mail.

Bassey’s versatility could make him an attractive option for the club. Although primarily a centre-back, the former Ajax and Rangers defender can also operate at left-back, potentially providing additional cover in that position as Luke Shaw approaches the final stages of his contract.

European clubs also interested

Manchester United are not alone in monitoring the Super Eagles defender.

TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle United, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also interested in Bassey.

The competition for his signature could make any potential deal challenging for United, particularly if other clubs decide to formalise their interest.

Bassey’s current situation at Fulham could also influence his next move. The London club have reportedly struggled for consistency this season and were sitting 15th in the Premier League table at the time of the report.

United, meanwhile, are expected to assess their defensive options as they seek to address concerns in the squad.

Although no formal offer has been confirmed, Bassey’s reported inclusion on United’s transfer radar places the Nigerian international among the defenders being considered ahead of a possible recruitment exercise.
