UCL: Donnarumma under fire despite Man City’s Champions League escape

Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has come under criticism after another unconvincing performance in the club’s 3-2 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

Despite City claiming all three points in Germany, Sky Sports analyst Lewis Jones questioned the Italian’s reliability, pointing to his costly error and several uncertain moments during the encounter.

“Manchester City may have escaped Leipzig with three points but Gianluigi Donnarumma is doing little to convince that he is the reliable last line of defence,” Jones said.

He blamed Donnarumma for Leipzig’s first equaliser, arguing that the goalkeeper failed to deal properly with a cross from the right. Jones also criticised his handling and decision-making, which he said invited pressure rather than easing it.

The criticism followed a difficult night for City, who surrendered their lead twice before Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal 12 minutes from time.

City had gone ahead through a Castello Lukeba own goal in the first half, but Donnarumma was beaten at his near post by Ridle Baku shortly after the restart.

Enzo Fernandez restored the visitors’ advantage with a powerful header from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross. However, Antonio Nusa levelled again three minutes later with a low finish into the bottom-right corner.

Haaland eventually settled the contest, tapping in Elliot Anderson’s low cross to give City their third lead of the night.

The Norwegian’s strike was his 13th in nine appearances against Leipzig, making the German club his most frequent scoring target.

However, the victory did little to hide City’s defensive concerns, with Leipzig threatening again in the closing stages. David Raum struck the crossbar, while Rayan Cherki also hit the woodwork at the other end.

Haaland admitted that City needed to improve their approach after taking the lead, saying they should have pushed for more goals instead of allowing Leipzig back into the contest.

“When we were 1-0 up I think we needed to go at it, go for the second goal and then the third – that’s what we have to do. We have to work on that,” he said.

City manager Enzo Maresca also acknowledged that his side struggled at certain moments, although he welcomed the result.

“Tough game in some moments. We controlled quite well but some moments we struggled. Champions League, Germany away, it’s tough so happy with the three points,” he said.

The victory moved City up to seventh in the Champions League league-phase table and ended their immediate search for a response following Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Brighton.
