Nigeria’s Flamingos reached the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final for the first time after a 3-1 victory over Brazil, prompting congratulations from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Nigerian side delivered a commanding display on Wednesday night to secure a historic place in the competition’s showpiece match.
Queen Joseph put the Flamingos ahead with a close-range finish four minutes before the hour mark. Her goal gave Nigeria the reward their performance had threatened to bring.
Awawu Bashiru then took control of the contest, scoring twice to establish a commanding advantage. The winger struck in the 71st minute before adding her second in the 80th, leaving Brazil with a difficult task.
Brazil reduced the deficit late in the match when Greise Kelly headed home, but the goal was not enough to deny Nigeria a landmark victory.
CAF marked the Flamingos’ achievement in a post on its official X account, writing: “AFRICA, MAKE SOME NOISE! THE FLAMINGOS ARE WORLD CUP FINALISTS! ??”
The result means Nigeria will contest the final for the first time in the history of the Flamingos’ participation in the competition.
They will face Japan on Saturday at Pitch 3 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, with the trophy at stake.
