Leeds United training focus this week underpins Daniel Farke scoring theory

Leeds United have scored just twice in the past five matches

Daniel Farke will focus some of this week’s training sessions on hitting the target.

Over the past three games, Leeds United have managed to direct just 11 of their 32 efforts within the parameters of the goalposts. Just one goal has been netted.

Farke believes Leeds are creating chances but are lacking the finish. He also called for his players to be more attentive to ensuring the shot stays on target when his side are dominating the game.

It is a simple fact that shots inside the box, and at closer range, are more likely to go in than those from afar. United mustered only three shots on goal inside the box against Bournemouth in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat - a new low since the last international break.

The quality of chances Leeds are conjuring up has been poor. Aside from the xG rating of 1.44 in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Leeds have failed to produce an overall xG total of more than 0.7 in the three other games in October.

Of course, one of them was Arsenal away, a game in which Leeds performed well and were unlucky not to take home any points. But that feeling of ‘could have got more’ is what will encapsulate the last five games.

The form of Crystal Palace, a 0-0 draw prior to the international pause, and Man Utd make the non-wins against both teams, at home, look unsatisfactory. The weather played a huge part at Sunderland but cannot be solely blamed for the lack of cutting edge.

Leeds were unlucky to have Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal correctly chalked off after his ricochet from his short-range shot bounced up onto his arm and over the line after a well-worked move. But afterwards, Leeds were timid and blunt in the final third.

OPINION

Farke is portraying a figure not worried or panicked by the fact of two goals in the last five games, even if he is honing in on shooting practice. However, he is aware that Leeds might need a bit of a break to get the scoring juices flowing again.

Speaking after full-time at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, Farke commented: “When you have a period like this, and then you find it difficult to find a bit of knack, then it's normally not that you score the first goal with a fantastic team goal like today.

"Then it happens that it's ruled out. You have to score with a deflected strike and dirty goal anyhow, and this is what I'm hoping for pretty soon."

It is true that Leeds were a better bounce of the ball away from scoring a lovely move. But after that, they failed to create anything substantial, which is the main worry for supporters.

And that Farke is hoping for a bit of help from lady luck is perhaps telling. He has spoken at nauseum about not having the "individual quality” in attack.

He has made clear he wanted more spent in the offence in the summer but couldn't due to spending restrictions. Leeds have to deal with what they have got, which should be enough to achieve their goal. The attack has not lost quality, if they have depth, since last season.

That goal, by the way, is to stay up again. Leeds are a quarter of the way to their 40-point goal with nearly a quarter of the season gone. But many feel the team has a lot more potential than that.

The last few weeks will have poured cold water over the idea of an outside European slot, even if they do still sit mid-table. And as a result, many are fearing whether that potential will be realised given the final third struggles.

From Farke’s point of view, he is wanting Leeds to be more accurate and create some luck. Neither can be guaranteed, which is why supporters hold concern.
