Super Falcons begin receiving Tinubu’s $100,000 reward after historic WAFCON triumph

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have begun receiving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promised $100,000 reward for winning a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) said payments of approximately ?140 million each had started being made to the players, representing the naira equivalent of the reward pledged by the President.

The financial recognition follows the Super Falcons’ dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which was played in July 2025.

Nigeria appeared to be facing defeat after falling two goals behind, but produced a strong second-half comeback to overturn the deficit and reclaim the continental crown.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked President Tinubu for keeping his commitment to the squad. She said the payment acknowledged the players’ work and their success on the African stage.

The reward forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to recognise and motivate Nigerian athletes after notable achievements in international competitions.

The Super Falcons’ latest title further extended their record in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and reinforced their position in the history of African women’s football.

President Tinubu has also honoured a similar pledge to members of D’Tigress following their success at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

The Nigerian women’s basketball team won that competition for a fifth consecutive time, extending its dominance in the tournament. Like the Super Falcons, D’Tigress received a $100,000 reward from the President.

The payment to the football team represents the latest financial recognition of Nigeria’s achievement in the continental competition. It comes after a final in which the Super Falcons recovered from a two-goal disadvantage to secure victory against Morocco on home territory.

Nigeria’s triumph gave the team a 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, while the reward fulfilled the financial commitment made by President Tinubu after the tournament success.

The NSC’s announcement confirms that the process of distributing the money to the players is now under way, with the reported payment to each member standing at approximately ?140 million.
