Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen delivered a standout performance during a 1-2 victory against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, answering questions about his capability in high-stakes matches, MARCA reported.
The central defender finished the fixture with 10 clearances, 16 defensive actions, and four blocks, according to match statistics published by MARCA. Huijsen maintained his positioning while Barcelona pressed during various stretches of the match, adding 37 completed passes out of 45 attempts for an 83% accuracy rate. Seven of those completed passes broke through defensive lines to aid Real Madrid’s build-up play under pressure. His quality with the ball and conditions to become one of the best central defenders in Europe had never been in question, but his performances in certain high-demand matches had left question marks. The derby and several Clásicos had fueled that noise, which found its response at the Camp Nou. Firm in duels, forceful in defensive actions, and concentrated throughout the 90 minutes, he offered the version that Mourinho has been looking for for a long time.

The performance at the Camp Nou provided a response to lingering questions sparked by earlier difficulties in demanding fixtures. Difficulties suffered at the Metropolitano across 2025 and 2026 had previously fueled doubts regarding Huijsen’s reliability in major matches, alongside inconsistency last season that left him out of the World Cup squad. Huijsen acknowledged those setbacks, stating that missing the tournament was a painful moment for him and his family.
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho emphasized defensive priorities for the central defender, noting that ball-playing ability is secondary to defensive solidity. Mourinho has worked to increase Huijsen’s aggressiveness and defensive resilience without sacrificing his distribution skills. With Éder Militão working through the final stages of his recovery to gain competitive fitness, the central defensive pairing of Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen has emerged as Mourinho’s preferred option in defense.
