Strikers who score 15 goals in European leagues usually turn heads in international football, but Dean Zandbergen will not be lining up for the Indonesian national team any time soon. Kompas.com reported that national team coach John Herdman confirmed the forward’s naturalization process has hit a permanent roadblock due to FIFA eligibility rules regarding family lineage.

John Herdman Confirms Lineage Rules Block Naturalization

The path to the Garuda squad appeared open for Zandbergen after a productive campaign in the Dutch second tier. The 25-year-old forward scored 15 goals for VVV-Venlo during the 2025/2026 season, catching the attention of Indonesian football scouts looking for sharp European-based attacking options. Born in Zoetermeer, Netherlands, on September 5, 2001, Zandbergen stands 188 centimeters tall and currently plays for Romanian club Dinamo București.

However, dreams of a swift national team call-up ended when officials examined his family tree. Noor Korompot, a special staff member to the Indonesian Ministry of Law, explained that Zandbergen’s Indonesian heritage traces back to the Depok area in West Java through his great-grandfather, VIVA.co.id reported. Under FIFA’s strict player eligibility statutes, ancestral claims must trace back to a parent, biological grandparent, or great-grandparent born within the association territory depending on specific residency rules—but Zandbergen’s lineage reaches the fifth generation, falling short of the standard requirement.

PSSI Avoids FIFA Sanctions over Naturalization Filings

While Zandbergen expressed a strong desire to pull on the red-and-white shirt and help the national team reach higher competitive heights, Indonesian football authorities refused to bypass regulations. Radar Cirebon noted that the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) opted to walk away from the paperwork rather than risk sanctions, pointing to past disciplinary cases where other regional federations faced heavy fines and international penalties from FIFA for irregular naturalization filings.

The stark reality of the situation creates contrasting fortunes within the national team setup. While Zandbergen’s dossier was shelved by John Herdman due to the generational cutoff, Enamplus reported that Dewa United’s Japanese winger Taisei Marukawa is nearing the final administrative hurdles of his independent citizenship transition, leaving open the possibility of a debut ahead of upcoming continental fixtures.

Alternative European Options for the Garuda Attack

With Zandbergen officially declared ineligible by the coaching staff, attention among analysts has shifted toward other potential European-born prospects who meet FIFA’s strict generational criteria. RCTI+ highlighted Markus Pall Ellertsson, a young forward playing for Icelandic club ÍA Akranes, as an alternative attacking profile. Born on February 6, 2006, the 188-centimeter striker has netted 10 goals in 21 league matches and derives his Indonesian heritage directly from his mother, placing him squarely within permissible eligibility guidelines.
