Liverpool may have to abandon their interest in Álvaro Carreras after Real Madrid reportedly made it clear that the defender is not available.
The 23-year-old has emerged as a possible option for the Reds as they consider strengthening their left-back position. However, the situation in Madrid has changed considerably since the summer.
Carreras was previously among the players who could have departed the Santiago Bernabéu, but José Mourinho now considers him an important member of his squad.
According to Bernabéu Digital, as reported by Sport Witness, Real Madrid have no intention of sanctioning his departure, particularly with his contract running until 2031.
Carreras initially faced an uncertain future because of Madrid’s crowded left-back department. Fran García eventually departed, while Ferland Mendy remained but reportedly sits outside Mourinho’s plans.
That situation has left Cucurella and Carreras competing for opportunities, with the Portuguese manager apparently satisfied with both options.
Cucurella remains the preferred starter, but Carreras has impressed whenever selected and occasionally challenged his teammate for the position.
His playing time has nevertheless decreased significantly. After recording 52 appearances for Benfica in 2024/25, he made 38 appearances for Madrid last season.
The defender has managed just eight appearances and 340 minutes during the current campaign, although his performances have maintained Mourinho’s confidence.
Madrid reportedly intend to distribute playing time between their two left-backs rather than sell Carreras and search for another replacement.
Liverpool have not been linked with an official offer or negotiations, making a transfer increasingly difficult.
Although Carreras could have been available during the summer, Madrid’s current position suggests Liverpool may need to consider alternative targets.
