Real Madrid midfielder Bernardo Silva has paid an emotional tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following the legendary forward’s decision to retire from international football.
Ronaldo announced his retirement from the Portugal national team on Thursday, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year international career that saw him establish himself as one of football’s greatest players.
The 41-year-old confirmed his decision in an emotional video shared on social media, drawing tributes from former teammates and football personalities across the world.
According to Madrid Universal, Bernardo, who spent several years playing alongside Ronaldo for Portugal, was among those who reacted to the announcement.
The former Manchester City midfielder expressed his gratitude to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, describing him as an inspiration to his teammates.
In a message shared on Instagram, Bernardo wrote, as translated from Portuguese:
“It was undoubtedly a great honour and pleasure to have played alongside you for so many years! You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you very much for everything.”
Bernardo’s tribute reflects the admiration Ronaldo commanded among his international teammates throughout his illustrious career.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to become the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer.
He retires having registered 146 goals in 234 international appearances, establishing himself as the leading goalscorer in men’s international football.
Ronaldo also enjoyed considerable success with Portugal, captaining the national team to their historic European Championship triumph in 2016.
He subsequently helped his country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, further strengthening his legacy in Portuguese football.
His retirement, however, comes following a disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, which resulted in the veteran forward leaving the national team camp and subsequently receiving disciplinary sanctions.
