Kenya’s Lionesses will be out to rewrite African women’s rugby history as they seek to end South Africa’s long-standing dominance and claim the continental crown on home soil in Nairobi.
The Lionesses have shown tremendous promise in recent years, steadily establishing themselves as one of the leading forces in African women’s rugby. However, the biggest hurdle remains overcoming the South African national side, the Blazeboks, who have consistently stood between Kenya and continental glory.
The two sides have met in eight finals, with South Africa emerging victorious on every occasion. That record underlines the magnitude of the task facing the Kenyan side, but it also presents an opportunity for the Lionesses to finally turn promise into achievement and prove they can compete with the continent’s best.
With the African title and qualification for World Rugby Division III at stake, Kenya will have little room for complacency. Playing in front of their home supporters could provide the motivation needed to overcome their long-time rivals and deliver a memorable performance.
However, the road to the championship will not be a two-horse race. Uganda’s Lady Cranes will arrive determined to make their presence felt, while Tunisia’s Eagles of Carthage will be equally eager to challenge for honours.
Madagascar’s Ladies Makis also pose a significant threat, bringing their own ambitions and competitive pedigree into the tournament. Each of the challengers will be hoping to capitalise on any slip-ups from the favourites and disrupt the established order.
For the Lionesses, the mission is clear: turn home advantage into a winning campaign, silence the doubters and finally break South Africa’s grip on African supremacy.
The stage is set for an intense contest, with Kenya’s historic opportunity resting on their ability to deliver when it matters most.
