Former Arsenal defender Gilles Grimandi has ignited debate across European football by claiming that Mikel Arteta’s Gunners currently rank above Spanish giant Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League hierarchy.

Speaking in a recent broadcast discussion regarding Europe’s elite clubs, the ex-Gunners favorite placed reigning continental heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain at the absolute summit of European football, but insisted Arsenal occupy second spot ahead of Hansi Flick’s goal-scoring Barcelona side.

Grimandi based his bold power ranking on structural defensive organization, arguing that while Barcelona boast individual attacking prodigies like Lamine Yamal, their underlying defensive setup remains far more vulnerable than Arsenal’s rock-solid backline.

The French expert highlighted that Arteta has constructed a remarkably balanced side capable of suffocating opposition transition plays, whereas Barcelona still allow high-value transition opportunities that can prove costly during high-stakes knockout encounters.

While acknowledging that PSG possess the tactical pedigree and tournament experience that makes them slight favorites on the continent, Grimandi expressed immense belief in Arsenal’s ability to compete with any side across one-off European fixtures.

He noted that the Gunners' physical steel and set-piece efficiency provide a stable foundation, giving them a distinct tactical edge over attack-heavy sides like Barcelona in physical knockout atmospheres.

The former defender's comments come at a time when North London expectations are reaching fever pitch across both domestic and European fronts.

As Arsenal prepare for their upcoming continental fixtures, Grimandi’s ringing endorsement reflects a growing belief among football analysts that Mikel Arteta’s tactical framework has positioned the club firmly alongside world football's elite contenders.
