Manchester United could be preparing for another major managerial decision, with several high-profile names reportedly emerging as potential replacements for Michael Carrick if the club decides to make a change.
According to a roundup of reports cited by BBC Sport, United technical director Jason Wilcox reportedly favours former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe should Carrick lose his job.
However, Howe is not the only name being considered. The Telegraph reports that United would also consider Julian Nagelsmann, with the current Germany boss reportedly interested.
Another intriguing candidate is Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, who has reportedly been identified among United’s dream options.
Italian outlet La Repubblica has gone even further, claiming United have opened discussions with former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte about a possible return to the Premier League.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has also been linked with the position. However, Talksport reports that Hurzeler would not be interested in the United job, while the Telegraph claims United would potentially have to pay a world-record compensation fee to prise him away from Brighton.
Away from Old Trafford, Arsenal are reportedly looking at Atletico Madrid and Spain winger Alex Baena, with a January move being considered.
The Gunners are also monitoring Monza striker Gustavo Varela, who has reportedly attracted interest from Napoli and Benfica.
Meanwhile, Juventus defender Gleison Bremer is reportedly wanted by Bayer Leverkusen and could leave Turin in January.
For now, these remain transfer and managerial rumours, but the names being linked show just how closely Europe’s football giants are already planning for January.
