Nottingham Forest supporters have expressed overwhelming fury following a controversial refereeing decision during Friday night’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Ipswich Town, labeling the choice not to send off defender Issa Diop as completely ridiculous.
The flashpoint occurred early in the second half at Portman Road when Forest midfielder James McAtee broke through on goal and was brought down by a sliding challenge from Diop outside the penalty area.
Referee Thomas Bramall initially allowed play to continue, but was subsequently instructed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to conduct an on-field review at the pitchside monitor for a potential Denial of an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity (DOGSO).
Despite replays showing Diop missing the ball entirely and catching McAtee as the last defender, Bramall returned to the pitch and announced over the stadium public address system that the foul only warranted a yellow card because McAtee’s prior touch took the ball toward the right side of the goal.
The explanation has ignited widespread outrage among traveling Forest faithful and neutral observers alike, with supporters arguing that McAtee’s directional touch was deliberately taken to create a better scoring angle around the goalkeeper.
Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner echoed those sentiments after the final whistle, insisting that Diop’s challenge was a clear red card that fundamentally altered the outcome of the match.
While former players like Ashley Young defended the official's stance by claiming covering defender Leif Davis and the goalkeeper would have reached the loose ball first, Forest fans remain adamant that they were robbed of a decisive numerical advantage.
The controversial decision leaves Forest reflecting on two lost points as the ongoing debate around VAR consistency in the Premier League continues to dominate national discussion.
